AKIHABARA

Akihabara, Tokyo: "Electric Town"
The name Akihabara is now world famous. More than 250 electrical appliance and electronic shops of all sizes are located in a small area cantered around Chuo-dori Street, to the west of Akihabara Station. In the past several years, the main trend has been a shift away from general home electrical appliances towards the new world of computers and the Internet. Emerging animation-related shops have also been attracting much attention. The shop assistants have a wealth of knowledge and are able to answer all sorts of questions. Many of them speak English, Chinese or Korean.
Akihabara: Otaku culture
Otaku culture in the Akihabara district is created by the people who shop and 'hang out' there. An alternative lifestyle, centered on technology and an obsession with Anime/Manga, has made the otaku outsiders in Japanese society. They gather here to meet others who share their interests. So Akihabara is a 'mecca' of sorts for otaku, and the term Akiba-kei ("Akihabara style"), or "Akiba-type" has been coined in recognition of this phenomenon. Recently, with increased exposure of otaku culture in the Japanese media, new buildings in the area, and the opening of another new railway line, Akihabara has seen a boom in popularity and is a favourite for many young people interested in its unique atmosphere.
