World Heritage Shiretoko & Eastern Hokkaido 4 days

A wonderful introduction to the natural heritage of Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost major island. Visit Sounkyo Gorge and Shiretoko, a Natural World Heritage Site, as well as the mysterious crater lakes of Mashu and Akan, in the heart of Hokkaido's volcanic scenery.
An English-speaking guide will accompany you throughout your trip.

ITINERARY

Day 1
Tokyo/Osaka - Sapporo - Sounkyo
Fly from Tokyo/Osaka to Sapporo New Chitose airport, arriving around 10:00-11:00. English-speaking guide at airport and proceed to visit of the vast flower meadows of Flower Land Kamifurano, the patchwork hills of Biei-no-oka, and Takushinkan, a small "photo palace" dedicated to the stunning nature photography of Shinzo Maeda.
In the evening, arrive at hotel in Sounkyo, a town nestling in a gorge famous for its natural beauty.

Day 2
Sounkyo - Utoro
Depart hotel in the morning by coach for Ginga and Ryuusei Falls and Lake Saroma. Lunch in Shiretoko (optional sightseeing boat). Stay overnight in Utoro. Shiretoko Dai-ichi Hotel

Day 3
Utoro - Lake Akan
Depart hotel in the morning by coach to visit Shiretoko Five Lakes and Mt. Io. After lunch, visit Lake Mashu, a mysterious and often foggy crater lake or "caldera". and Kushiro Marsh Observatory, set up in Japan's largest wetland to watch the Japanese Cranes (Tancho) which congregate here. Stay overnight at Akankohan by the shores of Lake Akan, known for its rare "marimo" or green ball-shaped algae. Hotel New Akan

Day 4
Akanko - Sapporo - Tokyo/Osaka
Depart hotel in the morning by coach for Onneto and Ashoro in the south-est of Akan National Park. After lunch, visit Tokachi Millennium Forest, an ecology/forestry project featuring garden design by Dan Pearson, and artworks by Yoko Ono, Didier Coubot and others. Arrive at Sapporo New Chitose Airport at around 16:00-18:00.
Depart Sapporo by evening flight to Tokyo/Osaka. Tour disbands on arrival at Tokyo/Osaka airport.
