Regional Rail Passes

Several of the regions of Japan have their own rail passes. These represent considerable savings on the nationwide pass if you are planning to travel in a particular area.
Please note these Regional Passes cannot be used by Japanese nationals (even if they are resident outside Japan).

Sanyo Area Pass

The JR West 'Sanyo' area Pass is valid for travel on the Sanyo Shinkansen Line from Osaka to Fukuoka and the local JR services which connect with that line. It is the only rail pass which can be used to travel on the Nozomi Shinkansen - the flagship of the Japan Railway's fleet. Also running on the Sanyo Line is the luxury 'Rail Star', an 8 carriage Shinkansen where all the seats are of a first class standard. 4 day and 8 day passes are available.Can also be used on the Haruka train (to and from Kansai Airport)

Kansai Area Pass

This pass is ideal if you are traveling only in the area of Kyoto/Osaka/Kobe/Nara/Himeji, including to and from Kansai International Airport. NOT VALID on Shinkansen(Bullet trains).
Children aged 6-11yrs half-price
A child aged under 6yrs per adult not occupying a seat travels free.
Valid for consecutive days.

JR East Pass

The East Japan Pass covers the whole area to the North East of Tokyo,- including the Narita Express (to and from Narita Airport) - up as far as the 'Seikan' Tunnel which joins the main island of Honshu with the North island of Hokkaido. 5 day and 10 day passes are available, as well as a 4 day flexi pass which can be used on non-consecutive days.

SPECIAL 3-day JR East Pass on sale until 20 November 2008. Valid for any 3 days (consecutive or non-consecutive) within a one month period. Exchange it for travel in Japan before 1st December, and all travel to be completed by 31 December 2008.


JR Hokkaido Pass

Valid on the Japan Rail network on the northern island of Hokkaido, and bus services of JR Hokkaido Bus (excluding Sapporo - Asahikawa / Sapporo - Mombetsu / Sapporo - Obihiro / Sapporo - Kiroro / Sapporo – Erimo & Hiroo lines and irregular lines).

Valid for consecutive days.

JR Kyushu Pass

All Kyushu Pass: Valid on JR Kyushu network on the southern island of Kyushu. The pass cannot be used on sleeper trains, the Sanyo Shinkansen “bullet” train, or JR Kyushu buses, but is valid on the Kyushu Shinkansen's Tsubame, the pride of JR Kyushu, and the "Sonic" limited express.
Northern Kyushu Pass: The JR Kyushu Rail Pass for the northern Kyushu area is not valid on Shinkansen Tsubame trains. See area of validity.
